New Mageau Nitro Vette Runs Hard! Jay Mageau's new "Prospector" nitro-burning Nostalgia Corvette was a top attraction during last Wednesday's Hot August Night event at Edmonton's Castrol Raceway. The car and team had their best showing since their cross over from 7.50 class racing to Nitro Nostalgia this season. In front of a jam packed house, the team was rewarded with a well-deserved win and career best times: 6.32 secs at 227 mph. "Not only did we run our quickest and fastest time ever, we did not hurt parts," Mageau revealed. "It also showed us that there is still lots of room in our new tune-up for a lot more power. On our second run of the evening it was very late, and the dew was settling on the track. The car did have a bit of trouble getting down the lane but we still ran our second quickest time ever. ( 6.41 secs @ 224 mph)." "The whole team is so excited and happy -- I think this was our 4th Hot August night event win over the years," Jay added. "It made it extra special for us that we ended up running faster than all of the big budget and big name teams that attended. How's that for a bunch of low buck locals!" My hat is off to my crew and also all of the folks at Castrol Raceway. They put on yet another stellar drag race and the track was well prepped even so late into the night. The fans were cheering all the way through." Photo Courtesy of: Don MacGowan
Mageau Family Racing will début the new long awaited "
Prospector" 1978 Corvette Stingray AA/FC this weekend at Castrol Raceway
during the Full Throttle drag event. Gates open at 10 Saturday .
The team is excited about shaking down the beautiful
new car, and experimenting with some new items under the hood. " we really
want to make a couple of easy and safe runs to see how the car responds to
the body change," says driver Jay Mageau, " Its so much lighter and
swoopier than the '57 Chevy we used to run, we don't know what its going to
do. If all is good , we may put a hard run or two on it by Sunday. The
boys did a great job on the car over the winter, and we hope its going to be
a big benefit to us! ".
3 Other AA/FCs will be in attendance as well, Terry
Capp and his Ron Hodgson's Bubble Up, Andy Beucheman , driving Tim
Stevenson's " Tachman" , and Todd Lesenko in his Twig Ziegler tuned " Jolly
Roger" . A full field of wild Pro Mods will keep the fans on the edge of
the seats!
2 words drag fans : Beeeeee there!
- We are going to unleash the beast within the next 10 days somewhere. Photos of completed new Vette and a video! stay tuned! - fo sail page update; carbz for the collector in your life!
came across this photo today of a real 1978 25 anniversary vette, and thought it would be cool to compare to our air brush guy Dave Dunbar. Pretty slick eh?
Well, its been a while since we updated, and due to our family situation not much has gone forward. We are getting back rolling however.
Thanks to our pals at Impact powder coating, all the tin on the car has gone from the dated red/pink to satin black, and it looks bad assed!
Heres a photo gallery of the progress!
some more build shots:
shop updates. - the crew have finished building the " A" engine and have installed it in the car. The Corvette body is all painted and awaiting lettering. the paint job , done at Egbert's Rod Shop facility is outstanding, and is very bright and flashy. The crew is working on installing the windshield, chutes etc. here is a spy photo taken Sunday out side of Egbert's. Hope you like it!
Shop Updates
Wow! the car looks super bright and fast. Special thanks goes out to Egbert's for letting us take over the place. Veteran Painter Albert, air brusher artist Dave Dunbar, and crew member Doug Anderson finished the paint on the Vette Monday night. It is wild. We want to put the whole car back together before we get photos but here's a hint:
- body update a short update...... painter and akzo nobel rep Albert, has down the base coat for the new Vette at Egbert's last night. Tomorrow airbrush artiste Dave Dunbar starts his part. stay tuned
- Industry updates I grew up in this sport, and Edmonton's drag club, the CCHRA , was always part of what we did. I was president for a few years and served a few years more in various executive positions. This year the CCHRA is turning 50 years old. I decided to volunteer some time and web space to help celebrate our sport and its local history. www.cchra50years.ca is the new site. Lots of neat things will be added through out the season. Check it out!
- Shop Updates We regret to announce that the new Corvette will not be in the Edmonton New Car Show as originally planned, nor will it make the NFCA poster this year. Complications having the car finished cropped up 3 weeks ago when the body was ready to go to paint. New plans have been made as of this week and the car will be painted in the next 2 weeks by our newly upgraded sponsor, Egbert's Rod shop. ( see Sponsor Updates Below) Egbert's has been a long time friend and supporter of us, and all the prep work was done there, so it made sense to just finish the job there. Further to that we have made plans with Powerama to unveil the new car at the April show, in a display with all 3 of the Mageau cars. - Some new bits and pieces have begun to trickle in. This week our refurbished computer came back. It suffered a nasty failure after some hard core tire shake in Saskatoon, but RPM has made it better than new. - We took delivery of our number 2 Bryant crank last week. We only put 9 passes on the number 1 Bryant crank last year, but it only makes sense to have 2. - We have a new radio system coming. I have resisted buying one of these but this car is too loud for the guys to properly communicate, so now we hill have a system for 2 crew guys to talk and the driver. Makes good sense, but having never used one, we will see how they work. (click the photos below for a full size view)
- Sponsor Updates - We have 3 big announcements to make this week.... and are we excited! In no particular order, -Egbert's Street Rods and collector cars. These guys can actually build a car from scratch. Gary Egbert is a genuine racing icon, and has built his business around the type of work only a true craftsman can do. Egbert's will be doing the paint on our new '78 Corvette
- Castrol Oil. Castrol oil, where " Its more than just oil, its liquid engineering". We welcome Castrol back as the official oil of the Prospector. Castrol has been working with us since we started on nitro, to help identify our lubricating needs and we welcome them back as a very important component of our team.
- Mageau Family Racing is pleased to welcome back our very first , and longest running sponsor, Edmonton Fasteners and Tools. E-Fast is the place to go for all your fastener needs, tools, hardware, power tools, construction equipment ... you name it. Race fans are very loyal to those companies that fund our sport , so if you need anything .. drive over and see these guys or any other the other Fastener Group stores in Calgary , Saskatoon, Red Deer, Surrey , and on and on.

- We would like to apologise to the management of our funny car association and our fellow members for holding up the promotional calendar and will solve the paint issue by next week or we will sit out on this years deal. Feb 1, 2009 more updates - Due to a situation beyond our control, we are going to have to put our Corvette on pause. Our guys thrashed for a long time to get the car ready for paint and the Edmonton new car show, but a situation arose which is causing us to temporarily hold off on those plans. More information will follow once we have it.
OH SO CLOSE!
- Dept of falling stuff - We have several acres at home. At least 1/2 of it is treed. So why is that the last 2 storms we had here, the trees fall right across the driveway? This was taken Saturday. Courtney had to park the Grand Prix at the bottom of the driveway and walk all the way up.
- SHOP UPDATES - Some parts are arriving back home. Our new "spare" crank arrived Friday. The fuel pump is on its way back from being "tweaked" by an old wise man, the computer is on its way from being repaired ( shook it to death) , and so much more. Steve Sanchez of Total Flow is putting the golden touch to the heads, and Bob Brooks at AFT is making the clutch just right. After discussing g our program with Mr Brooks, he offered a few suggestion that we are excited to try in 2009. - The chassis is down to bare metal, and we are waiting for a few things before we start putting it back together. The crew are presently spending time cleaning and maintaining the smaller components. Not one fastener remains un-inspected. Here's the shop this morning, with the big car in front, and the dragster in back.
-
- Tonight Charlie and Dave picked the Corvette body from Egbert's. The shot below is the car in the trailer. We will keep the car at the shop until it can get into Joeys Place for final paint. of
- While we were away, the crew guys continued to give'r on the new Vette body. The body was much rougher from the manufacturer than we anticipated , and has since received several hundred of man hours just to get it ready for paint. One of our senior crew members, Doug Anderson, is a career custom body and paint guy, and took the project under his wing. I think he took some type of twisted pleasure in seeing the rest of the team sand and sand and sand........ and sand. HUGE thanks to the crew for getting it done, and for Gary Egbert and Egbert's Rod Shop for letting us work in his shop to do all this work.
- The family is home from our Christmas break in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii. What a wonderful and relaxing time we had. My sister Brandy took this great shot the girls.
Thought this was a pretty accurate representation of the girls the way mom and dad see them.
