The new 1978 Corvette body custom built for us by Army Armstrong
of the Funny Car
Factory has arrived! What a journey it had! It went from PA to MI via Armys
trailer. The Paton's picked it up and brought it to Toronto, then
Paradise RV picked it up and brought it cross country to Edmonton. Thanks
to all involved. I went to see it last night for the first time.
Is it ever curvy ( its shaped like Marilyn Monroe! ) and
small compared to our '57. We will start work on it next week.

Busy week. A private show for a sponsor, then a private
test session at the track Friday, then race Edmonton Saturday, and looks like
race Calgary Sunday.
Lots of very late nights this week. The guys have been GIVENER
to the car up and running. Here's a few shots as of last night. Hope
to fire and test this weekend!

Our new second body is waiting in Ontario and will soon be
picked up and delivered by our pals at Paradise RV. A huge thanks goes out to
Craig Anstead the rest of gang at Paradise for helping us out getting the car home.
Take a second to check out the Paradise
RV web site. They carry several lines of nice RV's and are also
involved in race car transporters.
We will post pictures
once the body arrives.
Some interesting things have found there way into the shop last
week. More on these items in the future.

Our Venolia pistons finally arrived after UPS diverted them to
Germany for a week. ( and charged us $ 557.00 freight ! ) The crew has been
working like busy bees putting everything together and we hope to test the new
combination very soon. The car will hopefully be racing at the Full
Throttle event June 14 at Castrol Raceway.
Over the winter ,one of the things wrong we found wrong with the
car, was our custom made fuel tank. At the beginning of the season we had
a new tank made, and then after trying it, had 2 pieces added to the tank to
make it a bit larger. The resulting modification was done poorly and the
cuts made were not deburred. The result was a consistent flow of aluminum
chips through the fuel system. Despite constant monitoring of the fuel
system, we could not stop the chips and finally this winter, had the tank
cut open so we could see inside. After finding all the burrs we had a new tank
manufactured and hope to be done with those problems forever.
Do Bears really like Kraft peanut butter? Theresa took
this shot last week during our short trip to Seattle. This guy was right beside
the road!

Rumor mill dept.
- Word on the streets is that you may see the Prospector at a
test in the next 2 weeks. The car is pretty much ready to go, just waiting on
some Venolia pistons which are " in transit."
- Rumor mill part 2. The Prospector may be getting a larger
wardrobe. A back- up NFCA legal body maybe on its way to
Canada. More on this later! For those of you who like hints..... the
new 2nd body style shares the name of a world war 2 war ship that looked like a
battleship but was shorter. ( also for Tom the Mongoose McEwen buffs, he
won the 1978 US Nationals in this body style )
Guesses?
My pops has been working on his ground up restoration/
modification of his way cool 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air Bubble Top for several years
now. I went to visit him tonight, and had to take the following snaps.
The car is 99.9 percent done, and is really starting look nice. The car
has been built with a period 348 tri power, but underneath she has been upgraded
with new lowered suspension, disc brakes, over size sway bars etc.

Drag racers are great people no matter what class they are in.
Something I have always liked about our sport is the willingness that racers
have to help each other, regardless of whether they are competitors, foes,
different classes .. doesn't seem to matter. A big thanks goes out to
Canadian top fuel standouts, Barry and Todd Paton ( Tim Horton's Top Fuel car) .
Despite having an expensive issue in Milan MI at last IHRA national event, they
were kind enough to do a big favor for us. These are good folks . A big
thanks goes to the team for the assistance.
Team owner, crew chief Barry Paton sent along this amazing
photo today of some of the teams recent misfortune. Top Fuel anyone?

Wanted to put a congrats out to our very good pals over at Sitko
Family Racing . Nathan, Kenny and Troy were in Mission over the past
weekend for the div 6 points deal. They run a TAD and a TAFC , and
although the digger ran well ( 6.1's) it didn't get in the show. The f/c
got in by the skin of its teeth and as # 8 qualifier had to run number 1.
Any ways.. no Cinderella story here, but the car ran 5.875 @
242.06 in a - unfortunate losing effort. Nathan did get the guy with
a nice 0.069 light . But hey.. big numbers for these guys and I JUST KNOW they
will be pleased when they get home. Good job guys!
Move that stuff! Update.
We need some help! I need someone to move a f/c body
from PA to points north or west., IE Montana, Idaho, Washington , north Dakota
etc, will pay cash$ need asap. please call or refer to Jay 780 719 5749 or email
thx. jay@nitrofunnycar.ca
Proud family update. allow us to
brag for a minute.
- This is an important year at the Mageau house. Of
our 4 daughters, 3 are graduating this year.
Daughter # 1, Simone is graduating from the University of
Alberta with her science degree, daughter # 2, Justine is graduating from the
University of Alberta with her business degree, and # 4 daughter Courtney
is graduating grade 12 from St Francis Xavier high school. All of the
girls excel in school. We are very proud of our girls and commend them for
their efforts in their education. Daughter # 3, Rhea is currently in
2nd year university studying education. All the various grads are being
celebrated by the family this weekend. For those that were wondering,
these were all scruffy jr. dragster kids at one point.

COOL STUFF UPDATE.

- Now here's a traveled T shirt. Our pals from all the way
in Leichhardt Australia , Steve Turner and his team, sent us this this week. It
was sent with a small part by air mail over three weeks ago. Just for kicks we
checked on Google. The shirt traveled over 16,000 km's to get here ( around
10,000 miles.)
Come to think of it, we are some of the Northern most racers in
the world, and Steve's pals are some of the most southern most cars, so its
pretty much gone from one end of the world to the other. Thanks for the
great shirt Steve, and when we get a batch of shirts made up, you will get one
of ours in return!

Check out the new shiny stuff. The parts below
were, in our opinion, beyond help in the looks department. We took them to
our pals at Impact Coating Inc here in Edmonton. Bruce and Doug
have many years experience in powder coatings , ceramics and sandblasting.
Go the showroom, its a real neat set up and these guys know exactly what you
need for your hot rod, race car, our any other application. Impact can

WHAT'S NEW IN THE SHOP THIS WEEK?
- New stuff is coming in
almost daily. As mentioned our tire shipment arrived as well as our
wicked new magneto. This mag is built by Tom Cirrelo and is called the
Frankenstein 2. The specs tom gave us show that this thing is one
serious mag. Perhaps the most powerful points mag ever built.
Special thanks go to fellow racer Tim Nemeth for helping bring this mag
home.

How's this for a mountain of rubber? That's how they ship these things, all
squished like that. nice to see Goodyear no longer puts the white letters
on the front runners too.

Saskatoon's archives done masterfully by Blair Aldereton ,
SIR ARCHIVES 1966-2006 "40 Years of Fury" Photo Gallery by NITROIMAGE at
pbase.com knows what a great history that track has.
I'd like to do an archive site for CCHRA. I know that there are some old pix out
there... Wade? .Knowlesy, Stan? Liz? Goodwin? Kenny , Garnet? Only Edmonton
photos please from all 3 tracks.
.. . I will do the work, provide and set the site up and scan the photos. Credit
for the photos will be given to the prospective owners. I will do this as a
labour of love, and to kick off the celebration of 50 years of CCHRA in
Edmonton.
Your photos will be scanned and promptly returned , guaranteed. Undamaged.

Well , last weekend it was 24C outside , we took advantage of
the warm weather and started maintenance on the trailer. It was just beautiful
outside and every one was getting excited about spring and going racing soon

Then this happened. Snow HARD for the last 4 days. Here's
the rig as of this morning.

anyways... that's all I want to talk about today.
Race Shop Update
- We have an order of Pistons coming in from
Venolia , and an order of Rods coming in
from Childs and Albert's. Both
of these companies can be considered icons in the drag racing industry , and
they have treated us very well. We strongly recommend you consider them
for any serious race needs.
We just need a few more things and we will be ready for race
season. One of them being 2 more sponsors! Email
us here if you would like to join the Prospector in 2008!
-
One of the big head aches of running a funny car is
getting the body on and off. In our case, the old girl is a tad portly
and takes a gang of crew guys to do the big lift. These guys are
not always available so we came up with our own body sling. We use the heavy
duty winch at the trailer door to do the lift and whipped up a cradle of
sorts to safely pick up the body .

The new owner is still ironing out his future plans with the
car, and in the mean while we are helping out getting it tagged and carting it
around. It JUST fits in the trailer with the Prospector. Now she has someone to
keep her company.

- Well, Gordon Jenner has one for sale. Go here to
see his ad. Its a nice piece. Brand new in fact. We strongly encourage any of
you to consider buying it and donating to us so we can have a B car.
Go here
to see the ad.
Gerald's passing really shook us. He was a very special man, and
was a big part of our world for a long time. We miss him.
Our heart felt sympathies go to his family and friends that are
hurting at this time.
Things are progressing nicely in the shop.
A load of new Goodyear's arrived last week from our exclusive
wheel and tire supplier, Fountain Tire.
We look forward to a set of fancy new wheels - also from Fountain Tire- for
the Prospector in a few weeks and will post pix when they are mounted.
Fountain Tire is more than just tires! They stock a full line of
custom wheels as well. All of the teams rolling stock ( even our golf cart! )
has some type of custom wheel , all available through Fountain Tire.
Spring is the time for some cool new mags, and
Fountain
Tire has them on line now! Click here to go

Report On Team Changes.
Major news!

With the announcement of the new 2 mile
NASCAR high banked oval going in at the Castrol Raceway site, our team has taken
a long hard look at the direction we have been taking.
In the summer of 2007 , crew chief Bob Mageau
spent some time with some NASCAR officials who were visiting at the Grand Prix
race.
Its no secret that Bob, who drives an old
restored NASCAR race car everyday , loves the big oval .

We have some preliminary drawings of the new car, shown with new
Major Sponsor Lowe's Beer. In keeping with the '57 theme, notice the nice Bel
Air trim on the rear 1/4 panel.
Wish us luck!
mailto:jay@nascar.ca

Parts are arriving daily and things are trudging along in the
shop. The new fuel system is almost done at Davenports, the new Cirello
Mag is on its way and the chassis is getting some new tin at present.

Thanks to some help from some friends , The Prospector has just
taken delivery of a brand spanking new Keith Black stg 15 hemi block. Although
an enormous expense , we realized last year that in order to turn the car around
quickly , it would be advantageous to have a few major components as spares. We
still need other components that will come if and when the budget allows
(potential sponsors email here!

Race Schedule
Report! We are closer to releasing our 2008 schedule. We are
still talking to two of our favorite tracks, and will release something by
the end of March. As always, if you would like the Prospector at your track,
or would like to book the car for a static display email us here:
jay@nitrofunnycar.ca

It's the world Famous March Meet in Bakersfield California this
weekend. The event is not only the 50th anniversary of the March Meet, not
only the very first NHRA Heritage race series event, its also the largest
gathering of nostalgia funny cars in the history of the class and the highest
funny car count ever at Bakersfield. Whew! What an event.
To say we are disappointed we are not attending would be a very
big understatement, however we hope all the other Canadian teams, and
particularly our co- sponsored team- The Ron Hodgson , Castrol Oil, Bubble
Up trans Am team the best of luck.
-
If your like us and stuck in the snow while everyone
else is having fun at the March Meet, you can at least follow along on a few
web sites.
http://www.nostalgiafunnycarnews.com/forums/index2.php is one of the
fine sites Sharkey produces, and
Drag Racing Online has
some great day by day action starting
here. Drag racing scribe extraordinaire, Darr Hawthorne is at the event
and putting up new stuff every day. Darr put up this great shot of fellow
Edmontonians and our pals the Greckuls who are involved in the new Plueger
Mustang .

Be sure to follow the action, and join us in cheering on the
teams, as well as cheering on our home team pals, - Hodgson and Capp- Stevenson
and Beuchman- Ed and Mike Greckul
The NHRA , acting on the popularity of the nostalgia race scene
has created a series of classes and a multi event points series. They have
created a web site to talk about the new series at

The Prospector will be on display at the EMDA motor show this
coming weekend. Make sure to see this show. The weather is going to be
good, all the new stuff is at the show and a nice race car display
is going to be hosted by Joey's Place.
The Prospector will be on display beside Cal Tebb's
alcohol '55 Chevy funny car. Should make for an interesting photo or 2 as the
cars look similar.
Also, looks like the new 2009 Chevrolet Camaro will
be on display in the GM area. That will be worth the cost of admission
alone.

Welcome back Fountain Tire!

We are pleased to announce that Fountain Tire is back on
the car for 2008! Not only does the Prospector use
Eagle racing tires exclusively, but our support vehicles, trailer, and
team transporter are all running custom wheels available at most
Fountain Tire stores.
Welcome back gang.

I am interested in getting the ball rolling regarding a
50th anniversary of drag racing in Edmonton in 2009. I would like to plan a
special event at the track including a nostalgia style race , a memorabilia
show, a hot rod show and shine, and a evening catered party in the pits or in
the tents for anyone who ever drag raced in Edmonton -ever. I am sure there are
a hundred different things we can do to mark the occasion.
2009 is a significant anniversary for our sport in Edmonton, and it will be
recognized properly.
Any one want to brain storm?
lets talk.

Mageau Racing extends a warm welcome back to Castrol
Canada. Castrol Oil started with us in 2007 when we moved up to Nitro, and
we are thrilled they are back with us in 2008. Not only is Castrol one of

Sponsor News!

Edmonton Fasteners and tools has signed with MFR once again .
MFR has enjoyed a long relationship with the fastener group, and is very happy
that once again Edmonton fasteners is with the team.
Edmonton Fasteners is a full service retail fastener store with
several locations in Edmonton , and , as part of the Fastener group, is
associated with stores located all across western Canada.
Web Site:
www.edmontonfasteners.com
MFR
welcomes Mr. Gasket - Lakewood
to the associate sponsor fold. The Prospector uses a Clutch
safety belhousing manufactured by Lakewood. Welcome to the family !

- MFR
welcome back MOCAN oilfield. MOCAN was with us ,many years ago, and
returned in 2007 as an associate sponsor. 2008 sees the infamous DR. Moe
step up to the silver sponsor level. Welcome to the family !

- Meetings are ongoing
with the remainder of the 2007 sponsor group and notices will be published
over the next few weeks. We are always in need of the sponsorship
dollar. If your company is interested in becoming involved with the Nitro
team, please contact us at 780 719 5749 or email

Crew
and team news!
-
MFR
announces a few crew changes for 2008. Leaving is long time crew
member, Rick Yamada. Our crew are like family so its always sad to see them
go. We would like to thank Rick for his years of service and wish him luck
with his new venture.
On the same family note, MFR welcomes former team member, Dave Hollman
back to the family . Dave was with us several years ago, and is excited to
be back and learn the nitro game.
We have a new page up for the crew and
team, pictures will be added soon!
We still have one more position open
on the crew, and have had interest from several parties. We will make an
announcement in the next 2 weeks.
Other news
- Anyone out there that can
help us get a new body home please call jay at 780 719 5749. The body
is being built in PA. We are open to suggestions from top loading with
commercial freight, or hitching a ride in a race hauler. The body can
be dropped in Montana, Washington etc, but would be easiest if we had
it shipped up here. We don't expect a freebee. One option put forth
this week involved getting it shipped to Bakersfield for the march meet, but
that was the end of the line.
- Joey Steckler reports that
the '69 Camaro body we had built- and then sold - is now mounted on Jason
Bussey's 7.50 alky car, and looks great. We hope they have fun with
the car. Regarding bodies, we do have a NFCA legal body being built as
you read this. Cant say much more but a hint would be , its very
swoopy. And before the angry emails start: The '57 Prospector body is
going no where. It will continue to be our primary match race body.
Jan 13 2008
Things are shaping up with new resolve, new parts , new
people and some new sponsors for 2008. Keep coming back as wee make our
announcements over the next few weeks!
