Christmas Vacation

  •  Jay, Theresa and the 4 girls are heading out of the snow and to paradise .  Waimea, Kauai Hawaii.  The Waimea Plantation Cottages.  A collection of about 20 restored sugar plantation cottages nestled along the shore on the "Garden" island.  Kauai is the northern most island in the chain, and is the most "un tourist" of them.  We love it and are lucky to come back a second time.  We will be returning in January, and getting the '08 season underway.

  • Dec9, 2007

We got the 2008 season off to a start with a nice new Pro tag done in Saskatoon last week.

  •  We just got home from our annual Christmas open house show, at our long time sponsors, Edmonton Fasteners and tools.  The display is a great time for us to meet some of the great suppliers and customers of "E-fast" and is always well attended.

The "E-fast" open house show is traditionally the last function of the year for us.  And true to tradition, the crew guys loaded the car up, brought it back to the shop and stripped it down for post season inspection .   Here's the car by this afternoon.

  • Our shop is still pretty new to us, so I spent a little time decorating to make the place more race shop-ish. Now the guys feel right at home for the long winter ahead.

  •   My crew guys get excited when ever this happens..  Who Knows?

  •  Watch this space for a few sponsor announcements by Jan 4, 2008

  •  Word in the shop is that a new Waterman pump is winging itself here to join the Prospector for 2008.  Soon as it arrives, its off to Davenports for some tweaking.  We ARE excited.

  •   Word in the shop also sez a "legal" body announcement will be made soon.

 Nov 27, 2007

  •    A change in plans.  The '69 Camaro is out of the picture.   The very nice body , produced by Donnie Reeves in Georgia, just did not fit our always evolving plans.  The new owners,  The Bussey family, will run the car as a 7.50 alky car.  Stay tuned for an announcement further to this change in the near future.

Nov 7, 2007

  •  the car is all apart now.  Parts are heading to all points for recertification. Have a look at our videos from our year end wrap up party.  You have to watch part 1 before part 2.

  • October 22, 2007.

  •   Something kind of neat happened to me this summer.  I got to meet one of my all time favorite bands at a private function.  Pictured here is myself, ( Jay Mageau) and Tragically Hip lead singer, Gord Downie.   d/bryan photo

  •   One month and no updates.  sorry!  Lots has happened in this time.

- last test session at Bud Park Sept 30 saw us run a 6.88 while trying something different. - it didn't work

- A 2 day display at NAIT in Edmonton ( Northern Alberta Institute of Technology ) and a speech for the young men an women going into the automotives related fields

- our annual party , Bob and Jays wrap up ,  October 19, 2007.. a fun time had by all.

  •  More later!

Sept 20 2007

  •  The smallest of things can bring a race car to a halt.

  •  300 dollar warm up wasted by a pin

  •  strangely , with the way our season of "trial by fire" has gone, the photo above doesn't surprise me. It does disappoint me , but not surprised,

Those pieces are part of a small roll pin that holds part of the magneto together.

We decided to do some testing last weekend.

The team assembled at the track and put 4 hours in prepping the car for a scientific experiment test run.  I call them scientific experiments because we are trying to learn this game in a logical- scientific - manor.  Our goal Saturday was to make one clean run, change one thing only, make a prediction, and make a second run, then find out if and or what our change did,

After prepping and setting our tune up and then the warm up-  the car sounded killer.  We ran through the plans with the crew, and brought the car to the start line.   Bang!  It wouldn't fire.

Back to the pits ,  tear down and find the little broken pin.

We have always believed that you look after the little things and the big things fall into place. Replacing that pin after every race will now be one of the little things.

One the positive side, we learned something new, and are lucky that pin didn't break 1/2 way down the track or we would have had way more problems right now.

We hope to have one more chance to test before the  2007 season wraps up.

  •  A nail biting trial first fit of the new Camaro to night.  Our measurements were so close we really don't know if the new body will fit with out any major modifications to the chassis or body,

A credit to builder Donnie Reeves,  she fits as intended.

So we will begin the process of treeing and tinning the new car.

  •   CALGARY SHOW CALLED OFF DUE TO ?

The Sept 1,2 race event  in Calgary at Race City is off. ( for us) .  Despite having booked us over 6 weeks ago , we received a short email from manager Vern Christy  Monday that " funny cars wont be run" at the 25 year reunion event.   Further discussions with General Manager Rome Aulde  confirmed this .   We have since learned that some of the other feature vehicles were cancelled out of the booking contracts late last week.

Mageau Family Racing  would like to offer apologies to our friends, family and sponsors who made plans to come to the event . We would also like to offer apologies to the two tracks that we turned down after we were booked to Calgary.

Although the parts and fuel we put together to run this event will cost us in the short term, we sincerely hope that the future of the Calgary facility is not in fiscal jeopardy in the long term.

Aug 25, 2007

  •   AN OPEN INVITE TO ALL OF OUR FANS , FRIENDS , FAMILY AND SPONSORS WHO LIVE IN THE SOUTHERN ALBERTA AREA.  Be sure to join us at the Calgary Race City track on the Labor day weekend.  Other than some possible testing,  this will be the last Canadian date on our race schedule for 2007.  We would like to see you at the track so check www.racecity.com for times and prices.

  •  The Prospector gets to hang out with the 567 club!

  •  This weekend we had the pleasure to be invited to a local show and shine hosted by our friends at the Edmonton chapter of the 567 club.  These guys have tirelessly volunteered over the years to put on show such as this , and 2007's was a really fun deal.  Funds were raised for charity, lots of old cars were shown off, and despite the overcast and chilly condition, all kinds of people dropped in to check our the iron.

We had a great time meeting folks and talking about racing in our area, talking about our car, and hearing stories of days gone by form some of the attendees.

It was a blast to watch the pie eating contest, spark plug changing competition, and cheer on crew guy Charlie Eden in the shop creeper drags.  He lost in round 2 after getting crossed up at half track, and making contact with a cone.

Here's a few pix of the event.

Aug 22, 2007

  •  We are told that 2007 is the 50th year of something called NASCAR? To celebrate this occasion, the Northern Alberta Sports Car Club  borrowed our tow vehicle to serve as a pace car at the Edmonton Grand Prix Indy car race. WE got a real kick out of it, because if your a regular follower of our team, you would know that this car is actually Bob Mageau's original Prospector drag car from way back in the 60's.( t s/a) The old girl has been down a lot drag strips in her day.  We can sure see the humor of an age old drag car being used as a pace car for a bunch of left turners. We suspect that she probably pulled away from them on the straight away!

  •  More Hot August night pictures  thanks to Sandy J

  • more Camaro pictures thx to Sandy J!

To my crew guys.  A public apology.  Found , 1 set of 12 pt sockets in a bag.  Located in  my car that was commandeered by my daughter.  Was buried under junk.  Guess we don't have to sacrifice Charlie's manhood after all.  Or is too late?

Aug 17, 2007

  • Hot August night happened!  The place was packed. All was good.  A huge thanks to our friends at Castrol Raceway for inviting us to run.  Our evening was not with out problems, as our best run was 193 mph.  We know what happened, and have made some changes.  Out next race is Race City Speedway Sept long weekend.  Check these great photos by our old friend Sheryl Ogonoski.

  •  Here's a photo gallery of the hot august night

  • Here's a few of the new Camaro body, just delivered to my Garage.

Aug 13, 2007

  •   An update!   The Hot August night event that was to be held Aug 8, has been postponed to Aug 14 , 2007  due to rain.   Our team has been working like thrashed dogs because we had some parts failure in testing   for this event.   Please come out and if you see any of our crew, give them a big “ATTA- BOY!”  because they sure deserve it.

  •  The new funny car is now here.  Its a beut!  Pix in  a few days

  •  Our annual hall party is coming soon.  Be sure to get your ticket before they are gone .  Fabulous door prizes!

  •   A couple of polls for you. They rotate so they may be different each time you come back

  • July 30, 2007

Prospector '57 car is booked to appear at Edmonton's annual Hot August Night, WED  August 8 at Castrol Raceway ( www.castrolraceway.com) .  We are asking all of our friends, family and sponsors to attend this ultra fun  short format event. BE SURE to come to the pits and say hi!

  •  A close friend of our family was killed in an outdoors accident.  Our most sincere and heartfelt condolences go to her loving family.  RIP Robin.

  •  The new body is coming!  It has made its way from Georgia to our pals Ken and Donna Krause' shop, Autoworld in Great Falls MT.   Thanks go to them for helping us!

  •  notice

Early this year MFR decided to keep our schedule closed until the new nitro car was built, tested and licensed. This is done. We are still very new at this, but the car is now available for event competition and shows.  Our friends at Race City in Calgary have officially become the first track to formally book us for their Labor Day long weekend event.  The track and fans at Calgary have always been very good to us in our IBAA days, and MFR thanks them for your support of our new venture.  We have always enjoyed racing in Calgary!

You can follow our schedule , which will be pretty lean this year due to the late start, by clicking here, or on the bar marked " schedule" to the left.

  •  We have received many positive messages  concerning the new 1969 Camaro z 28 body that is being built .  We have also had a few fans concerned about the future of the '57.  NOT TO WORRY!  The '57 will remain in our stable.  The car is a fan favorite, and we will continue to make the car available to the tracks and shows.  The '69 car is being built ONLY to fit the rules of the NFCA and will likely not see local match race competitions. We do, however plan to build the new car with the same care and detail that we built the '57 with, and are sure that everyone will love this thing when its done.

Here's a spy picture of the car off the mold.  Its being transported to Great Falls MT as you read this, and our friends Ken and Donna Kraus of Autoworld are going to baby-sit it for us till we can pop down and pick it up.

The nats.   How fun was that!  Pix to follow. We ran one of my heros, Terry Capp, in front of a more than full house.  ( Thx to Ron Hodgson for making the thing happen) Our first side by side race as a nitro car.  They beat us 6.17 to our 6.65.  Was told the fans loved it.  I know we sure did. Our crew are feeling a lot more comfortable with the car now, and so is the driver.

Made lots of new friends and hopefully a fan or two.   Will update future plans in the next few days.

Short notice showdown!

As an added bonus, fans attending this weekends  5th annual Cars RV IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceways in Edmonton Alberta, will get to see a best of 3 match race exhibition of the new NFC  nostalgia nitro funny car class.

Former US National TF winner , and current Canadian motorsport hall of fame inductee, Terry Capp will wheel Ron Hodgson's Pacemaker Bubble Up '77 Firebird NFC .

Jay Mageau, who won this very event 3 times in the popular Pro Nostalgia alcohol funny car class, has just completed his testing with Mageau Family Racing's "Prospector" '57 Chevy NFC, after making the switch to Nitro early in 2007.

The cars are built to the stringent rules set forth by the Nostalgia Funny Car Association, and are designed to replicate the performance of the cars from the '70's and 80's.

Capp has run as quick as 6.05 earlier this year in his car, and Mageau went 6.68 in testing last weekend.

The exhibition is hosted by Ron Hodgson Pontiac, and both cars are sponsored by the dealership

The runs will happen Friday at 7, Saturday at 2, and the final Saturday at 7.

July 2 2007

Man!  Do we have some catching up to do.  June 25 saw us at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton for our very first test shot.  It was a planned 330'er .  Things went according to  plan, and despite only running the car for about 3 seconds, it still went in the 9 second zone @ 101 mph!

June 30 saw us back a Castrol for further testing for a planned 660'er and a 1000footer.  The 660 run was Saturday, and the car coasted through the lights at 7.35 @ 125 mph.  Sundays run was absolutely awesome with a 1050' blast that netted the team a 6.68 @202 mph coasting across the finish line.

We would like to thank our crew who have worked tirelessly for 6 weeks, and our sponsors for making this happen.  Also thanks to Jeff Gaynor, our technical nitro advisor.

Here is a small gallery of the weekend,  we did hurt the car-  welcome to nitro-  but have already repaired it.  Our next event is unclear at this time but things are going forward.  More info as it happens.   A big wish of good luck to the Kincaid family who are the new owners of all of our 7.50 Chevy stuff.  We joined them in testing, and they are going to do just fine with the car.

June 24. 2007

Mageau Family Racing  has commissioned Donnie Reeves of White , Georgia  to build a  1969 Camaro z28 body to compliment the teams popular " Prospector" 1957 Chevy Bel Air funny car.

"We will continue to run and promote our '57 Prospector car.  The new body will be first of its kind to come to Canada, and is being built at considerable cost to allow the team to completely meet the NFCA and NHRA special nitro rules. "  " Our  gorgeous '57 Chevy will always be with us, but the rules actually make her to old for nostalgia points competitions.  The '69 z will put us right in the '65- 79 rule book,. The '69  Camaro has been a very popular car over the years with street rod, muscle car, drag racers, and classic muscle car restorers.  We think it will appeal to a wide range of fans."  It will also continue to keep the team under the GM banner.

The '69 body is to be delivered by mid July and the team hopes to have it tinned , treed and mounted before the seasons end for a few shake down runs in an effort to come out of the gate swinging in 2008.

Initial plans are to have the body painted by the masters at Joeys Place ( www.joeysplace.com) . Joeys Place applied the show stopping paint scheme on the current '57 car, and aside from being the number one paint stop in all of Canada, they are funny car racers too and know what it takes to make a race car beautiful.

Photos of the build will be made available on the teams web site as it happens, at www.nitrofunnycar.ca

  •

Well,  I am back from my tour of the great metropolis, Milwaukee WI.  Not much to do there, but hey,  they make some great beer,  so I helped the local economy a bit.

So while I am there, my crew call me to tell me the car is 100 percent ready to lite for the first time.   The God Gaynor has given us our start up parameters and they want to lite it.

So they put local alcohol 22 year old racer kid Nathan Sitko ( and long time family friends)  in the seat, and lite it off.

I get excited phone calls about how great it sounds and smells. Real loud too!  Lots of cackle!  Shoulda been here!

So my crew, my car, my dad and my family friends lose their nitro virginity before I do.

Oh well.  Whos gotta bigger heart than me?

I instruct the crew to do a post warm up inspection, and if everything's good,  load the trailer, and we will tow to Calgary on the weekend for some shakedown runs.

I fly in from Milwaukee Friday night,  meet the team and trailer early Saturday moring, and excitedly hit the road for Calgary.  An hour into the ride,  my cell rings....  " turn around , the race is washed out, poor forecast for the next few days.. the whole things cancelled."

I remember having similar frustrated feelings when I was a teen.

  •  all postings from Jan 2007 to May 2007 now are filed under the Previous Postings button above.

  •  Best wishes from our team to old friend Wayne Barber who was injured in a pit mishap over the weekend.  Chin up!  Old Pal.  We are thinking about you.

  •  Congrats to our friend and nitro adviser Jeff Gaynor and his partner Bob Godfrey on there win at the Goodguys Indy race over the weekend.  You can find coverage here.

  •  As much as I dislike the long, long winter here in Edmonton,  the summers are great.  I live on an acreage and my wife and I enjoy working on the property when we have time.  One thing about our home is the fact that it is truly a place we can " stop and smell the flowers" when things get stressful in our lives.  Our place is a relaxation tonic for us.

As I was headed out the door on Saturday, I was stressed the race car was not ready, but stopped to take this picture of our front yard. How can you be stressed in a place like this?

  •  The car.  WOW! its taking a long time.  Our guys are working full tilt, and have been for the last month or so.  If you have been around racing much, most of the parts on the cars are hand made. These things take time.  Although our team agreed we would wait till the coming winter to really fancy the car up, we still follow the motto " you only have to do it right once."

  •  Although it is exciting and challenging to work on something new, and "learn as we go" I think our guys have about had enough of the "build" chapter and want to move on to the next part of our adventure, so we are calling the build "complete" and are going to fire the car Monday night. We just could not get the car done in time to test at home, so we are thinking about taking the car to Calgary for its maiden voyage next weekend.  We have also talked to Saskatoon about licensing/ testing, but have yet to hear back.

  •  A big thanks goes to team Hodgson , Capp,  Jenner and Leong .  These guys are great. Despite the fact they will ultimately be our competitors, they took crew member Rick (Kato) Yamada under there wings and tried to stuff as much nitro knowledge into his brains they could in in weekend.  They have been extremely helpful and encouraging in the past few weeks. Thanks again fellows and we will see you on the starting line soon!

  • Well.  The Prospector looks like a (better than) new car again.   The artistes at Joeys Place out did themselves.  Here's a sneak peak. The whole car has been repainted, although to most , it will look exactly the same ...... Beautiful!

  •  we are coming along.  Gary Egbert of Egbert's street rods allows us to use his custom fabricating facility on the weekends .  The custom stuff takes so long, but like we always say on our team. " You only have to do right once"  Thanks to the gang at Egbert's for allowing us the shop.

May 21 2007

  • Well, we are chugging along. Slower than I hoped.  A great deal of parts are still coming, as well, the engine was missing some things , which we are still waiting for. The headers were a labour intensive deal. Got them fitted however, and crew member Doug  is final welding them this week .

  •  The body is gone to Joeys Place  for new shiny stuff.  How lucky we are to have one of the premium shops in north America right here in Edmonton . Guaranteed the car will look bitchen when they are done with it.

the guys have about 40 hours into little repairs

even all sanded and missing her glass, she looks good

  •  Wanted.  Only 1 position .  Crew member.  Come and join us on our latest adventure. Must have funny car, nitro, alcohol or blower car experience.  Like all of our team, its a volunteer position. We cover travel and race expenses.  We are very serious about what we do, but always have fun.  We try to keep the work load down.  contact us  Jay or Bob .  Come and smell the nitro man. You will be the top of the pack.  You will be the best.

Only a few spots left!

  •  We will announce our 2007 sponsors in 2 weeks.  We are still in need of a gold level sponsor , as well as 2 silver level sponsors.  We also need "product sponsors" or associate sponsors.  Things we use every day like Brake Clean ( LOTS) , gaskets, FUEL , uniforms, Radios ,  Oil, Plugs , Bearing Pistons,    the list goes on -   and on-.   For the record , we will use more than 10 barrels of fuel this year, and fuel is about 1200 per drum.

Many companies would like to be  involved but just can't handle the Gold or Silver level sponsorships.  These product sponsorships may be just what the doctor ordered .  Its a cheaper way to get involved in Nitro funny car racing, and WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET to put this Edmonton car on the track.

A perfect example of an associate sponsor would be say, Arrow Welding, providing a barrel of fuel, a box of pistons, a case of brake clean, and a case of shop towels.  They are in the game for less than $1700.00.  What a cheap way to get involved in the world of Nitro racing, but still an important addition for our efforts.

The Gold and silver sponsors we need are of course more expensive, but the exposure plan is a great deal more as well.  What an excellent way for an Alberta company to advertise for employee recruitments. Talk about an "in your face" way of appealing to a trades person for less than the cost of a medium size Journal ad, and we are portable.  Imagine firing this baby at your next recruitment session. Think you'd get attention?

  •  The body was supposed to go to Joeys Place for painting last week, but he had a few bottlenecks and couldn't get us in. Doug and Dave started the task of repairing the various dings and cracks at the shop.   We are preparing to leave soon to pick up the new engine and components, and if things go alright, we should be ready to fire early in May.

  • April 4 2007.

Happy Easter weekend to everyone.  I have added a few pictures to the site, accusable under the Multimedia button on the left.  There is also a video section going up soon.  A classified section is up where we will sell our parts. You can add your own parts as well.

  •  car update.  Parts are flying back and forth literally, all over North  America.  Some parts are in Texas, some in Ohio, of course here in Edmonton, and the main components are in California.  we have our Nitro adviser Jeff Gaynor hailing from Riverside  collecting most of the engine stuff, and long time family friend George Sitko who lives in Anaheim, collecting chassis components.

  •  The plan is to head down south in the next week or so, and pick this stuff up.  The crew have been prepping the chassis for the arrival of the Hemi. The body is heading over to Joeys Place to get a freshen up done to the paint.  A new fuel tank had to be built .  You know its 45 liters now! An oil tank too.  18 liters.  wow.

  •  Its exciting that we have had interest from 3 tracks and we are not even fired up yet. We are aware and prepared that the team will have a massive learning curve and some growing pains ahead of it.  We are confident however , that we have the skills to get the car running well in short order.

I am looking at adding a second logo, perhaps for some t shirts in the future.  Have been working with a U.S. graphic artist on this, but not sure if this is the logo we will ultimately come out with.  Your opinions here.

  •  The clock is ticking.  Not much longer till we fire up the new Prospector.  Can't wait. The good news is the Prospector will look much the same, but is going back to where she came from, Joeys Place  for some touchups and paint.  She looked great even after 6 years of hard racing on his paint, but Joey wants it right, and so it will be. One things for sure, when it rolls out of Joeys it will be a sweet looking machine.

  •  So have we told you about the new stuff yet?  Our tried and true alcohol Chevrolet :  Out.

Nitro burning Keith Black Stage 15 hemi:  IN!!!!!

The nostalgia nitro rules are designed to make the cars run much like they did in the late 70's to mid eighties.  No more than 500 cubes,  very small fuel pump no over driving allowed, very small blower 18 percent overdrive max , very small magneto/ no msd here! A  2 speed lenco, and crowerglide style clutch.  85 - 100 percent sweet smelling cackle juice!  Nitro methane!!! 3.90 gear, and 2300 lbs.  These cars run in California averaging 6.60 - 6.70 times at 215 mph. A small handful of cars have gone 5.98 at almost 230 but the $ required to do this is phenomenal, and soon we will see more rules to slow them down.

Our own goals are to get the car to the mid 6's in 2007, and take our time learning this all new game.

  • March 21, 2007  Major Announcement!

We would like to make official few changes with the Prospector.

Our old team web site was closed last year (www.dragracing.ca) so if you happen to have the old site on favorites, you better delete it. All of my old email addresses are all gone as well.

My partner/father and I have reached a new agreement regarding our team, and although its very late to stir things up for the 2007 season, our teams new web site will now be www.nitrofunnycar.ca

Some very exciting changes will be happening to the Prospector this spring!

You may see us occasionally hanging out with our old IBAA friends this summer, but our focus is going to be developing a new NHRA special nitro, or VRA legal nitro fuel combination for the car with occasional parts and technical assistance from NFCA 5 second guru and tuner of the Ron Capps driven nostalgia funny car, Jeff Gaynor. We have a 2 year plan that ultimately sees us obtaining a legal VRA body to complement our old '57 . Bob continues to be my partner , crew chief and tuner.

Running a nitro car has been a life long dream of mine, and I feel privileged to have the support of my sponsors and family to run with this. My partner- crew chief and father- Bob Mageau although reserved, is excited about the new challenge , and steep learning curve ahead of us.

Till we hit the track, you can follow along with our adventure. The new site will start to go up in the next few weeks. Our racing email is now jay@nitrofunnycar.ca , and as always, my cell is 780 719 5749.

Look forward to seeing all of our old friends at the tracks this summer, and maybe we will make a few new ones too.

Jay and Bob Mageau , Prospector Nitro Funny Car, Edmonton AB.

PS, you gotta see the crew... they are freaking!
